Jubba Airways, a regional airline that serves East Africa is celebrating two decades in business in 2018. Abdullahi Diria Warsame told HOL that Jubba Airways – described by many as Somalia’s ‘unofficial national carrier’ – was founded in April 1998 and from its inaugural flight, their mission was to connect East Africa to the world.

“Looking back at the company’s two-decade history”, Mr. Abdullahi Diria Warsame, Managing Director of Jubba Airways, says “We founded the airline in April 1998 with a group of entrepreneurs to establish a reliable airline to accommodate domestic and regional air transportation throughout East Africa.”The five entrepreneurs raised $US 800,000 from Somali businessmen and investors and made its inaugural flight on May 28, 1998.

Since the collapse of the Somali government in 1991, the main airport was largely closed as warring clans fought fiercely for control for anything that can generate revenue. Jubba Airways was forced to land at desolate airstrip miles from the capital. Shortly after, flights were then redirected to Baledogle, a military base 95km from the capital. The company is named after a river that snakes down central Somalia.

“From its inaugural flight, the airline’s goal was to meet the demand for air travel in East Africa, particularly Somalia, Djibouti and Kenya,” says Warsame.

Somalia’s sparsely distributed population, poor infrastructure and perilous security situation make travelling by land dangerous. These disadvantages make for ideal situations for airlines jostling for position in what is quickly becoming one of the most profitable routes in Africa. Since it’s inception, Jubba served as Somalia’s when it was cut off from the rest of the world, and itself. Businessmen, the diaspora and religious pilgrims relied on the airline to deliver reliable air transport.

Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport today is a far cry from when Jubba Airways began its operations in Somalia. Today regional airlines and international carriers alike battle for their share of a lucrative market.

After two decades in service, Mr. Warsame said that Jubba Airways takes pride in delivering high levels of performance and customer care and becoming one of the largest single carriers in the region.

Last October, their customer care was put to the test when a Jubba Airlines flight on welcomed the unscheduled arrival of an extra passenger after a mother gave birth mid-air. After delivering her healthy baby, the passenger named her child after the Jubba Airways employee who went above and beyond to assist her during her labour.

Warsame is optimistic about the future for Jubba Airways and the travel industry in Africa. He said that the airline hopes to establish more regional flights while giving priority to under-served routes in domestic and regional sectors with hub and distribution.

“We see a great potential and a growing demand for African airlines especially for direct flights to Europe and Asia,” he says. Mr. Warsame adds that various African governments are investing in airport infrastructures as well as developments in other sectors across the region, underlining that such projects will pave the way for more free and easier travel between countries in the African continent.

More
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24206955.post-32162609512316075552019-07-01T14:00:00.000+07:002019-07-01T14:00:04.877+07:00BUMN Diajak Garap Pasar Afrika

BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- In Mauritania, only one train to ride exists: It is nicknamed the Iron Train. It stops once for five minutes in Choum on its daily 437-mile journey from Zouerat in central Mauritania to Nouadhibou on the coast. Its main purpose is to transport iron ore, 22,000 tons mined in Zouerat daily and poured into 220 iron hoppers linked together to make a 1.5-mile-long train. Passengers can stow away for free in the hoppers or they can pay about $3 to sit on benches inside two passenger cars. The journey can take anywhere from 16-21 hours depending on the weight of the train.

Photographer Daniel Rodrigues rode back and forth twice, climbing onto the mounds that sank beneath his weight and turned his clothes burnt orange. Fellow passengers wrapped their heads and faces with long pieces of cloth to ward off the hot winds of the desert, or the iron dust that pierced their skin like tiny needles. Sometimes goats or donkeys could displace the common sight of boxes of apples or potatoes thrown hastily on board by food sellers. People shared tea, cooked atop bits of charcoal dug into the iron and lit aflame. Most of the time people slept as the train ambled at 30 miles per hour.

It was the sky that Rodrigues remembers the most. “It’s that time when the moon has just disappeared and the sun has not yet risen that you can’t believe the number of stars,” he said. “Only in the desert can you see this. Millions and millions of stars.”
BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- The legacy of the Indonesia-Africa relationship is written with a golden ink in history. Indonesia hosted the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung and is one of the initiators of the Non-Aligned Movement. The summit clearly marked a monumental landmark for the relationship.

In 2015, Indonesia once again hosted the conference in commemoration of its 60th anniversary. This summit marked a new era of relationship between Indonesia and Africa.

The 2015 Asia-Africa Conference revived the Bandung Spirit of anti-colonialism and solidarity among former colonies and developing countries, and further strengthened the New Asian African Strategic Partnership. In 2015 Indonesia was granted observer status in the African Union – Africa’s most ambitious regional organization yet.

In 2016, trade between Indonesia and its Sub-Saharan counterparts jumped off the charts, by not just double, but even multiplied by five times in some cases. With Rwanda, trade even multiplied by 17. Last year alone, Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi, and Deputy Minister AM Fachir visited Africa three time. This truly shows that Indonesia means business in Africa.

Other great economies have turned towards Africa -- labeled by many as “the region of the future”. President Jokowi has reiterated that the African region is a top priority. In the G20, Indonesia has expressed full support to the G20 Africa Partnership and related programs.

Earlier this year Minister Retno also said in her annual statement that Indonesia is giving development in Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, and Latin America high priority. But while Asia is often referred and divided into South Asia, Central Asia and so on, Africa is always referred as a whole continent. This indicates that while Indonesia has great plans in the region, the reluctance to name specific African subcontinents means that we are still in the process of defining which parts of Africa will be our main focus. Therein lies the need of an occasion in which stakeholders from various sides can explore the opportunities as well as discover their primary focus.

Later this month Indonesia is scheduled to host the inaugural Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) in Nusa Dua, Bali. With participants expected from 53 countries from both Northern and Sub-Saharan Africa, the event will primarily focus on strengthening economic relations, including through business matchmaking, through the involvement of government agencies, business corporations, and many other stakeholders.

The BRICS economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa have long initiated forums with African nations. The India-Africa forum summit has been going on since 2008, and China pioneered the China-Africa Cooperation in 2000. Vietnam developed the Vietnam-Africa International Forum a few years ago. Though a latecomer, it’s the right time for Indonesia to improve in particular its trade relations with African countries.

The Global Competitiveness Index 2017-2018 by the World Economic Forum showcased many similarities between Indonesia and the Sub-Saharan Africa economies. Both share the same hurdles that are bottlenecking their economic growth; low education and lack of technological readiness. Some experts have even indicated early symptoms of deindustrialization in the two regions. Thus dialogue on sharing best-practices and confidence building measures is crucial.

As Foreign Minister Retno stated, the Indonesia-Africa relation must go beyond the Bandung Spirit. The 2015 Asia-African Summit should be viewed as the prologue of modern Indonesia-Africa Relations, and the IAF should be its first chapter. (Eriz Wicaksono)
BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- On 9 July 2011 South Sudan became the newest country in the world. The birth of the Republic of South Sudan is the culmination of a six-year peace process which began with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005.
In adopting resolution 1996 (2011), on 8 July 2011, the Security Council determined that the situation faced by South Sudan continued to constitute a threat to international peace and security in the region and established the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) to consolidate peace and security and to help establish conditions for development.

Following the crisis which broke out in South Sudan in December 2013, the Security Council, by its resolution 2155 (2014) of 27 May 2014, reinforced UNMISS and reprioritized its mandate towards the protection of civilians, human rights monitoring, and support for the delivery of humanitarian assistance and for the implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.
BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- As Riyadh becomes more involved in leading the regional security effort, its reach will extend to the Horn of Africa with a military base in Djibouti, reports Financial Times.

Strategically located on the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, Djibouti already has American and French military bases.

Djibouti is finalizing an agreement with Saudi Arabia to allow the Gulf state to build a military base in the Horn of Africa nation as Riyadh takes a more assertive approach to regional security.

China also is opening its base there this year, according to Mahmoud Ali Youssef, the foreign minister of Djibouti.

Youssef said that Riyadh inked a security agreement with the government last year and followed up with a judicial co-operation accord this month as it prepares to set up its base.

Djibouti faces Yemen across the Red Sea, where Saudi Arabia is the leading the Arab coalition against the Houthi militias.

The Arab coalition forces support Yemen’s exiled government which is in control of Aden and other parts of Southern Yemen.

Youssef said the military cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia will be signed soon in Riyadh, without giving details.
BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- If you want to fly to Mogadishu, it will likely be via Turkish Airlines, the only international carrier flying into Somalia. You will arrive in a spanking new terminal run by Favori LLC, a Turkish company. The roads are freshly tarmacked by TIKA, Turkey's development agency. The solar-powered street lights — also from TIKA. The Turkish Red Crescent provides everything from refuse collection, road construction, waste water treatment to debris removal. Several thousand Somali students also study in Turkey on government scholarships. In all, Turkey doesn't suffer from a lack of ambition.

So what is Turkey doing in Somalia and why is it so popular with us Somalis? What's behind the emergence of so many Turkish flags in Mogadishu?

These are some of the questions asked by officials and observers from Western nations, neighbours, and some Arab countries. They are puzzled by the sudden rise of Turkey in Somalia. The problem, however, lies with their arrogance and their determination to keep Somalia in a subservient position. Ask any Somali about Turkey and they will give you a candid answer.

Simply put, Turkey is popular with Somalis because its intentions and approach benefits both peoples. The two nations have historic links but renewed relations began in August 2011, during the height of the Somali famine. Two planes carrying Turkey’s leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his wife, along with a delegation of politicians, business people, charity workers and the media landed in Mogadishu.

It was clear Erdogan and his team were responding to the graphic pictures of malnourished children they saw on their television screens. Millions of Somalis inside the country were suffering from acute hunger, and many more were deeply traumatised. We felt powerless and abandoned by the world.

However, Erdogan’s visit lifted Somali morale and brought much needed global attention to the crises. Turkey came to our rescue during one of our most desperate times. That’s how the Turkish people won the hearts and minds of the Somali people.

I was covering the famine at the time and I met some of those affected by the disaster. The suffering that I witnessed will always remain with me.

What particularly made me angry was hearing from humanitarian agencies that the US had decided to withhold aid and told others to follow suit. Officials in Washington thought if the local population were starved, they would turn against Al Shabab thereby weakening the group.

That cynical strategy of using food aid as a weapon didn’t bring the demise of Al-Shabaab — but it has certainly contributed to the deaths of thousands of poor Somalis.

Ankara decided to look beyond the politics of men in suits; it took a pragmatic approach. Turkish charities immediately arrived in Somalia to distribute food supplies.

At the same time other projects started, such as rebuilding the airport, the port and the largest hospital in the country, as well as the main roads in the capital. Erdogan announced that Turkish Airlines would start flying to Somalia — the first international carrier to do so for more than two decades — enabling the Somali diaspora easy access to the country. Thousands of Somali students were given scholarships. "Traditional donors" usually talk about figures and release well-written statements, while doing very little on the ground. But Turkey’s engagement policy was effective and fruitful.

On the political front, Turkey has been very sensitive in not being seen as another foreign entity keen on exploiting Somalia. One particularly successful strategy has been by working with the central government rather than with clans.

In contrast, the West, neighbouring countries, and some Arab nations bypass the central government and lend direct support to various clans fighting over power and influence. This triggers further division.

The most important issue for the US and the EU is the so-called 'War on Terror,' which in reality means bringing more guns into Somalia — a nation already awash with weapons.

The UAE has been making unilateral moves, signing lucrative contracts to run some of Somalia’s major ports. This tiny Arab nation is fast earning a lot of disdain within the country. Somalis rightly disapprove of foreign actors who don’t respect the sovereignty of the nation.

Challenges facing Turkey

Turkey, however, faces enormous challenges in cementing and deepening its nascent relationship with Mogadishu and, more widely, the Somali people. Somalia is without doubt a complicated place riven with internal rivalries. External regional actors continue to exert a negative influence on Somalia, and international actors vie for influence in a strategically important region.

It is difficult for foreigners to fully grasp Somalia’s internal politics because we are a complex society. It’s a country where loyalty to clan or religion is entwined with the motivation to make money or gain power.

Navigating this minefield is bound to test Turkey's patience and will in Somalia.

Some foreign governments, who are unhappy with Turkey’s involvement in this African nation, are working hard to undermine it.

The most overt method to undermine the relationship is to buy off powerful individuals and clans to turn against Turkey.

So far, it hasn’t worked, and as long as Turkey doesn’t give them an opening, they won’t succeed.

Turkey limiting its presence in Mogadishu could however be seen as support for a particular clan. The anti-Turkey coalition will try to capitalise on this assumption.

One way to counter this is for Ankara to expand its projects beyond the capital city, while building on its successful partnership with the central government. It must avoid being dragged into the Al Shabab conflict. Many Somalis regard the so-called ‘War on Terror’ as a cover for ulterior motives. Turkey must not be seen cooperating with countries that have sown destruction in Somalia.

BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- Once again all roads led to Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital for its biggest annual event organized by the Directorate General for National Export Development (DGNED) of the Ministry of Trade.

The 31st Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) 2016 held in JIExpo Kemayaroyan Jakarta, from October 12- 16, 2016. The expo attracted 15,567 buyers and visitors from 125 countries. A number of buyers came from various regions including international markets previously untapped for Indonesia, such as Africa and the Middle East. Indonesian exporters, this time, were also more diversified ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to private enterprises and state-owned enterprises. The event featured over 1,000 Indonesian exhibitors, while various trace-related events such as Business Matching, Trade Tourism and Investment Business Forum and others were presented. The products that were showcased in TEI 2016 were manufactured products, home appliances, food and beverages, handicraft, creative industry, to service and agreement.

At the opening ceremony of TEI, 2016, His Excellency, Mr. Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia accompanied by Enggartiasto Lukito, Minister of Trade, and Djarot Saiful Hidayat, Vice Governor of Jakarta, called for Indonesian entrepreneurs to expand their market abroad, especially to non-traditional market countries, as it offers a lot of opportunities for Indonesian products to develop there. He expressed optimism while making this clarion call: “we have to be brave in entering new markets such as India and African countries which have an average of 60-80 million citizens.

That is a big market that we need to expand.” President Jokowi encouraged Indonesian entrepreneurs to continuously improve the quality of their products and produce more added value products in order to penetrate more markets abroad. He noted not only Africa and India, which provide lucrative opportunities for Indonesian products, that other developing markets like South Asia and Latin America hold great potential for Indonesian exporters to expand markets and distribution of their products. The President also awarded the Primaduta Award and Primaniyarta to the best 30 Indonesian exporters. According to President Widodo, after observing some products made by entrepreneurs from several regions in Indonesia which are designed by professional product designers, stresses they pay attention to the design, they can be rest assured that Indonesian products can reach more consumers both in the local and global markets.

This year’s expo had a strong representation from the Embassy of Indonesia in Abuja and the Indonesian Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC), Lagos headed by His Excellency, Mr. Harry Purwanto, Ambassador of Indonesia to Nigeria and Mr. Nino Wawan Setiawan, Director of Trade respectively. Also, the Nigerian Indonesian Commercial Association (NICA) led a delegation, part of which was the Bauchi State Government. Mr. Mohammed Aminu Abubakar, Director General of Bauchi State Promotions Investment Agency ably represented the Governor of Bauchi State who was unavoidably absent. Interestingly, Nigeria ranked first amongst the top ten countries sending its delegates to TEI 2016 with 443 people according to Sulistyawati, Director of Export Product Development, Ministry of Trade. Over the years ITPC Lagos, a non-profit governmental organization which is under the supervision of the DGNED has been organizing delegates to attend the trade expo but this year’s witness a well organized delegation with very many Nigerian companies in attendance.

As a matter of fact, the presence of Nigerian delegates undoubtedly brought special mission where they were hunts for daily products to be imported to Nigeria. Buyers from Nigeria were very much interested in health and beauty products, fashion accessories and cosmetics. The interest also covers textile and garment products, agricultural products like coal, fruit and vegetable and animal product, home decoration, electronic goods, food and beverages, as well as coffee. Buyers from Nigeria continued to remain in contact with local companies after the expo. Last year, Tradexpo Indonesia successfully attracted more than 10.000 visitors from over 100 countries, and generated in total trade transactions valued at over US$ 900 million. However, this year, Trade Expo closed with a satisfactory number of transactions valued at almost $975 million, a 7.2 percent rise from last year, the Ministry of Trade said in a statement. Of the total number of transactions recorded, $826.52 million involved the sale of goods and $48.23 million for services. Indonesian investment abroad accounted for the remaining $100 million worth of transactions.
BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- Africa’s largest airline group, Ethiopian Airlines, on Wednesday announced its plans start scheduled flight services to Jakarta, the Indonesian, in June 2017.

According to a statement released on behalf of Ethiopian Airlines by Jedidah Promotions, a travel consulting group, the African aviation giant, will be using the ultra-modern Boeing 787-800 to link up its numerous customers with Jakarta, which is Indonesia’s economic, cultural and political center.

Indonesia, which is made up over more than 13,000 islands is the 4th most populous country in the world and, with this new service, Ethiopian Airlines will be rendering service to all five of the most populous countries on earth.

Ethiopian is a multi-award winning airline, registering an average growth of 25 percent in the past seven years.

“As the fastest growing airline in Africa, Ethiopian is pleased to offer the opportunity to business people as well as tourists to explore Jakarta’s potential both for investment and leisure. This move will further increase our presence in Asia, connecting Africa to the Asia region and in turn strengthening the tourism and trade ties between the peoples of Africa and Asia,” said Tewolde GebreMariam, who is the Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.

According to him, Ethiopian Airlines is working very hard to connect Africa with the major trading centers of the world and Jakarta, Indonesia is one of them.

“Moreover, pilgrims and the West African community residing in Indonesia will be enjoying hassle-free connections to Ethiopian’s vast African network via its hub at Addis Ababa,” said GebreMariam.

Ethiopian is touted by its management as a global carrier that operates the youngest and the most modern fleet on the African continent, with an average aircraft age of less than 5 years, serving more than 90 international destinations across 5 continents through over 240 daily departures.

The company is the fastest growing Airline in Africa and, in its seven decades of operation, Ethiopian has become one of the continent’s leading carriers, unrivalled in efficiency and operational success.

Ethiopian commands the lion’s share of the pan-African passenger and cargo network, operating the youngest and most modern fleet to 95 international destinations across five continents.
Its fleet includes ultra-modern and environmentally friendly aircraft such as Airbus A350, Boeing 787, Boeing 777-300ER, Boeing 777-200LR, Boeing 777-200 Freighter and Bombardier Q-400 double cabin. It is also the first airline in Africa to own and operate these categories of aircraft.

Ethiopian is currently implementing a 15-year strategic plan called Vision 2025, which it projects to see it become the leading aviation group in Africa with seven business centers, including the Ethiopian Domestic and Regional Airline, the Ethiopian International Passenger Airline, Ethiopian Cargo and the Ethiopian MRO.

Others are the Ethiopian In-flight Catering Services, and the Ethiopian Aviation Academy and the Ethiopian Ground Service.
BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- Kenya manufacturers who rely on palm oil will be adversely affected following the decision by African states to cut the crop’s production by 70 per cent in a bid to curb its devastating effects on the environment.

The agreement was reached in Marrakech, Morocco, last week during the 22nd conference of parties (COP22).

The product is used in manufacturing a number of consumer goods including cosmetics, soaps, and cooking oil among others.

The country imports crude palm oil since it is not locally available. A project initiated by government in western Kenya some years ago failed.

The General Manager of the Golden Africa Kenya Ltd Abdulghani Waghohi said they will have to diversify into other products in the event that supply of the crude palm oil reduces.

“The decision that was reached might not have an immediate effect on manufacturers because it will take many years before it comes to effect,” said Mr Waghohi.

Local industries import most of their crude palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, which are the world’s leading producers.

However, the growth of palm trees have had a negative effect on the environment and companies are now setting their eyes on Africa as their next source of oil.

It is reported that a third of all mammal species in Indonesia are considered to be critically endangered due to unsustainable growing of palm trees.

In 2003, the then Kenya Agricultural Research Institute introduced palm oil farming in Western Kenya, as one of the government’s poverty reduction strategies. It covered 12 districts in the regions bordering Uganda. And despite the numerous research showing that Western Kenya is perfect for palm oil production, the project failed to take root.

Sustainable ways

Palm oil producing countries in Africa have pledged to adopt more sustainable ways of producing the oil, in order to protect their tropical rainforests.

The 10 governments signed a joint declaration at the climate talks held in Morocco.

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil globally, with half of all packaged products sold in supermarkets containing the product.

To produce palm oil, a lot of forest land in the tropics is cleared. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), reports that an area equivalent to 300 football fields of tropical rainforest is cleared every hour around the world to make way for palm oil production.

Sustainable means

In Africa, palm oil is produced in Central African Republic, Cote D’Ivoire, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Liberia, Nigeria, Gabon and Congo.

These countries have now signed a declaration to use more sustainable means of production, with minimal damage to the environment.

Nigeria is currently Africa’s largest palm oil producer and the fifth in the world, with 2.5 million hectares under production.
BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- Algeria and an Indonesian group Monday signed three accords to invest $4.5 billion in phosphate mining, as the North African state aims to consolidate its position in the industry, officials said.

The industry and mining ministry said the deals were signed by Algerian public companies Asmidal and Manal and Indonesia’s Indorama Corporation.

“The strategic aim of this partnership is to transform five million tonnes of phosphates into phosphate-based fertilisers and to produce one million tonnes of ammonium and 800,000 tonnes of calcium ammonium nitrate,” Mining Minister Abdesselam Bouchouareb said in a statement.

He said Algeria aims to become the third largest phosphate producer in Africa, after Morocco and Tunisia.

The deals signed on Monday will cover the fertiliser needs of Algerian agriculture and allow for excess production to be exported, said Bouchouareb.
BATAK CENTER FOR AFRICAN STUDIES -- Madagascar, the large island off the east coast of Africa known for its biodiversity, may have been colonized by as few as 30 women and a small group of men as recently as 1,200 years ago, according to a new study. Researchers found that inhabitants share genes with people in Indonesia, the archipelago 3,500 miles away.

The Madagascar colonization is one of the least understood episodes in human history, the authors wrote. Despite their proximity to Africa, the Madagascan people are racially, linguistically -- and now genetically -- closely related to Indonesians and Malays.
