Sonatrach, the Algerian hydrocarbons organisation, discovered 16 new hydrocarbon fields in the Sahara desert in 2008, announced the Algerian energy and mining minister, as reported by APS. Nine discoveries were made in the Illizi basin (in the extreme south of Algeria) and in eastern Erg, whilst the other seven were found in partnership with foreign companies: two were found with the help of MedeX, two with Statoil, and one each with Bp, Bg/Gulf and Cnpc.
The country's 2006 law on hydrocarbons made it compulsory for Sonatrach to have a 51% stake in all contracts for the prospecting and exploitation of hydrocarbon fields and also contracts involving the transportation of energy.
