Mogadishu University: Pioneer in Education and a Model for the Country

The devastating civil war in the 1990s destroyed education system and other civil service sectors. Many schools that existed prior to the outbreak of civil conflict were completely destroyed or seriously damaged. This caused to cease functioning all educational systems from primary to higher education. Many teachers and students were displaced and forced to seek security in their clan areas or flee to refugee camps abroad. Moreover, many children and youths were exploited and forced by the warring parties to join in the armed movements.

After few years later, following the destruction of educational systems and infrastructure, primary and secondary schools were established; teachers and other educators who saw the need for education opened their own institutions with the help of local and international NGOs.
